February Letter from the President

Dear Friends,

You may already know that SAWA hosts two conferences each year — and in my humble opinion, they’re great! But we do much more than just conferences, and in the years ahead, we have plans to go even further. One of those plans is professional development for executive-level leaders. This kind of training has always been one of our strengths, and we’re looking for ways to deliver this high-quality development to even more professionals in animal welfare, animal care and animal control.

In 2017 and beyond, you’ll notice SAWA’s increased presence at state and regional industry conferences, including:

  • Animal Care Conference — Sacramento, Calif., March 12-14: SAWA will be exhibiting.
  • New England Federation of Humane Societies Conference — Springfield, Mass., April 8-10: SAWA board member, Brad Shear, CAWA, and I will be presenting the SAWA Animal Transport Best Practices document.
  • Texas Unites for Animals — Austin, Texas, April 22-24: We are presenting, exhibiting and sponsoring at the Leadership Track.
  • Also look for us at the Animal Care Expo (Fort Lauderdale, Fla., May 9-12), the Prairie States Animal Welfare Conference (Bloomington, Ill., June 4-7) and the Great Lakes Animal Welfare Conference.

I would also like to give a special mention to our friends and partners at the ASPCA who are graciously sponsoring a seven-part webinar series covering the SAWA Animal Transport Best Practices. There are still three sessions left in the series and if you missed earlier ones, they’ve all been recorded and are available on ASPCAPro.org. Participation in these fascinating webinars has exceeded all expectations. Not only has the series been educational, it’s also connected source and destination organizations all over the country. For more information, and to register for upcoming sessions, visit our webinar series page.

One final event you shouldn’t miss: our June Management Conference in Long Beach, Calif., June 14-16.  Registration is now open. Our conference committee has put together a fantastic program loaded with informative and compelling presentations to help you perform at the highest level.

I look forward to seeing you in Long Beach or elsewhere on the road this year. In the meantime, please keep in touch and let us know how SAWA can add value to your work.

Happy spring!

Jim Tedford
